Savannah, Day 1: Saturday, Jan 17, 2009

I feel like it's been a while since I've traveled. Going to Hyde Park for Anna's graduation doesn't quite count. That's one of the reasons I decided to take a trip to Savannah, GA for MLK/Inauguration weekend. The other reason was to get away from everyone traveling to DC to see Obama become President of the United States. I suppose I would not be able to tell my children and grandchildren that I've witnessed that tremendously important event.

This was going to be one of my me-myself-and-I vacations, but then my friend Paige decided to take a bus from Atlanta and meet up with me for a few days! (Paige and I became fast friends a few years ago after meeting in the elevator of our apartment building...but then she decided to move back to Atlanta...sigh).

Here's how I decided to do the update of this vacation: I will write about everything that happened in Savannah on this blog, but everything food related will be documented on Mango & Tomato. Hope this doesn't confuse anyone :)

After the unfortunate loss of my ring, I made it safely to the Marriott on the Riverfront hotel, checked in, and waited until Paige made it into town. [Side note...there is no public transportation in Savannah from the airport into the Historic District, and so I had to pay $35 for the cab each way!]

After a mini reunion, we decided to go explore the city for a bit. We walked down the River Street, which reminded me of Montreal. Actually, I've noticed that the more I travel, the more places seem to look alike...maybe I'm just getting old! There was an old ship "parked" there and we took a little tour (free!).

After walking through some of the Historic District for a bit, we got quite hungry and made our way to the City Market area. That's where you'll find a great variety of restaurants, boutiques, galleries and entertainment. The photo below is of one of the wagons at the City Market filled with flowers: I thought it was very pretty. Paige and I did stop by the Lady & Sons, but the wait was enormous. And the smell of butter hits you like a brick over the head. I'm sorry to say, but I haven't sampled any of Paula Deen's cooking this time around.

Instead, we had dinner at Vinnie Van Go Go and dessert at Cafe GelatOhhh!
And then it was time for bed: Sunday was awaiting!

First impressions: very quaint city with beautiful old trees, grand houses, nice people and cobblestone streets: don't wear your heels, girls!

It sounds like you had so much fun. For a minute there I really thought that was Paula Deen. :)

At first glance, I totally thought that you had photo taken with Paula Dean!

hahah yeah some people were luckier taking the photos to make it look like she was really there.
